Sometimes when you plug in a flash drive or a usb in ubuntu it will not load instant, and you have to restart the computer to recognise the newly usb device. Try this to escape time wasting procedure

First try

$ sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart

then

$ lsusb

Now you should see the new added USB drive
